Emily & Tony’s Flint Engagement Photos: From Stepping Stone Falls to Downtown Flint

There is something special about an engagement session that feels like an adventure—and Emily and Tony’s session tonight was exactly that.
We started their Flint, Michigan engagement photos at Stepping Stone Falls along the Flint River, surrounded by trees, rocks, rushing water, and all the natural beauty this little corner of Mid-Michigan has to offer. Then, as the evening continued, we headed into downtown Flint and finished their session high above the city on a rooftop.
Nature, water, city views, and a whole lot of love. It was the perfect combination for an engagement session that felt completely unique to them.
Engagement Photos at Stepping Stone Falls
Stepping Stone Falls is one of my favorite places around Flint for couples who want something a little different for their engagement pictures.
Instead of a traditional field, garden, or wooded trail, you get the Flint River, the falls, rocky surroundings, and the opportunity to create photos that feel adventurous and authentic.
But there is a little bit of planning involved when it comes to photographing couples directly in front of the falls.
The water level needs to be low enough.
Tonight, the conditions were just right for Emily and Tony. The river was low enough that we could make our way down to the area directly in front of the falls and capture the two of them with the water rushing behind them.
And when I say make our way down, I mean it.
Getting to that spot requires going down a fairly steep bank—and after we're finished, you have to climb right back up. It's not necessarily the easiest part of an engagement session, but sometimes the most memorable photographs require a little adventure.
Emily and Tony were up for it, and it was completely worth the effort.
There is something about having the Flint River and Stepping Stone Falls behind a couple that gives their engagement photos a dramatic, almost cinematic quality. The movement of the water adds life to the images, while the natural surroundings keep everything feeling relaxed and timeless.
It's also the kind of location where you don't have to force anything.
Walk.
Explore.
Hold hands.
Laugh.
Get a little closer.
Let the river do the rest.
Those are often the moments that end up becoming some of my favorite photographs.
The Beauty of a Michigan Engagement Session
One of the reasons I love photographing engagement sessions in Michigan is that we have so many different environments within a relatively small area.
You can have a completely natural outdoor engagement session one minute, and then be surrounded by architecture and city views shortly afterward.
That's exactly what we did with Emily and Tony.
After wrapping up at Stepping Stone Falls, we headed toward downtown Flint for the second half of their session.
And this is where their engagement photos took on a completely different personality.

For my downtown Flint engagement sessions, I often have couples meet me around the Flint Farmers' Market. It's a great starting point for exploring the city before we make our way to the rooftop.
Downtown Flint has so much character, and I love incorporating that into engagement photography.
The buildings.
The streets.
The architecture.
The city lights.
The little details that make Flint feel like Flint.
And then there is the rooftop.
One of my favorite parts of finishing a session downtown is getting up above the city and giving couples a chance to see Flint from a completely different perspective.
From the rooftop, you can look out across the city and see some of those familiar Flint landmarks and details, including the weather ball.
It's one of those views that can make you stop for a second and appreciate where you are.
And for couples who live in the Flint area, I love that these aren't just pretty photos in a random location. They're photographs connected to your city.
Two Locations. One Incredible Engagement Session.
What made Emily and Tony's session so much fun was the contrast between the two locations.
At Stepping Stone Falls, we had nature, water, rocks, trees, and the Flint River.
Downtown, we had architecture, skyline views, rooftops, and the energy of the city.
The result is an engagement gallery that doesn't feel repetitive.
Instead, their photos tell a little story about the evening.
We started surrounded by nature.
We explored the river.
We made our way down to the falls.
Then we headed into the heart of Flint.
And we ended the night overlooking the city together.
That's my favorite kind of engagement session.
Not just standing in one spot and smiling at the camera, but actually spending time together and allowing the session to unfold.

Just keep in mind that the river conditions matter.

Emily and Tony brought the kind of energy that makes photographing couples so much fun, and I couldn't have asked for a better evening to explore Flint with them.
